Why Fabric Matters: How to Choose Comfortable, Breathable & Better-Quality Clothes

We spend hours thinking about how a piece of clothing looks. But how often do we think about what it is made of?

The fabric of a garment affects much more than its appearance. It can change how comfortable you feel, how the garment moves, how it holds up over time and how often you actually want to wear it.

When building a wardrobe, understanding fabric is a simple step towards making more conscious clothing choices.

Why does fabric matter?

Your clothes spend hours against your skin. That makes the feel of a fabric just as important as how it looks.

A good fabric can feel comfortable, allow movement and work well for the purpose it was designed for. Depending on the garment and climate, factors such as breathability, softness, moisture absorption, durability and friction can all make a difference.

There isn't one fabric that is perfect for everything. What matters is choosing the right fabric for the right garment and how you intend to wear it.

Natural vs. synthetic fabrics: Is one better?

Not necessarily.

Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and wool have different characteristics from synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon and viscose. But simply calling one category “good” and the other “bad” doesn't tell the whole story.

The quality of the fibre, how it is processed, the fabric construction, its intended use and how long the garment lasts all matter.

For example, a fabric that is durable and worn for years may have a very different impact from a garment that loses its shape after a few wears — regardless of the fibre category.

What should you look for when buying clothes?

Instead of focusing only on the name of the fabric, look at the bigger picture.

How does it feel? Does it feel comfortable against your skin?

How does it perform? Is it breathable enough for when and where you'll wear it?

How is it made? Look at the construction, stitching and finishing.

Will you wear it often? A beautiful garment isn't a conscious choice if it spends most of its life untouched in your wardrobe.

Will it last? Quality should be considered alongside appearance.

Better clothes start with better questions

Choosing better clothing doesn't mean knowing everything about every fibre. It simply means becoming a little more curious about what you buy.

At Second Skins, we believe the fabric deserves as much thought as the design. Our approach begins with choosing fabrics for their comfort, quality and everyday wear, while creating pieces that feel easy to live in and worth reaching for again.

Because clothing should look good — but it should also feel good against your skin and make sense in your wardrobe.
